Best website builders in the UK
There is no single best builder, only the best one for what you need to do. Here are the main options with their UK prices, who each suits, and the point at which a builder stops being the cheapest answer.
For a simple business site, Wix is the cheapest of the big names at about £9 a month on annual billing. Squarespace (from £12) suits people who want a tidy result with less design effort. If selling products is the point of the site, Shopify (from £19 a month on yearly billing) is built for it. No builder writes your pages or does your local search work for you.

The main builders compared
| Builder | From (annual billing) | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wix | about £9 a month | Lowest price, free plan, design freedom | Light cannot take payments |
| Squarespace | £12 a month | Tidy, consistent design with less effort | No free plan, 2% store fee on Basic |
| Shopify | £19 a month | Selling products online | Third-party payment fees of 2% on Basic if you do not use Shopify Payments |
| WordPress.com | US$4 a month (priced in dollars) | Blogs and content-heavy sites | Prices exclude taxes, and many features need the Business plan |
| GoDaddy Website Builder | about £203.88 a year outside sales (GoDaddy's own figure) | Simple sites bought alongside a domain | Sale prices differ from renewal prices |
When a builder is the right answer
- Your business is new and the budget is tight.
- You enjoy this kind of thing and have the time.
- Most of your work comes from word of mouth, and the site is mainly there to confirm you are real.
In those cases, start on a builder. It is the cheapest way to have a decent site, and you can always move on later.
When it stops being the cheap option
- You need to rank on Google for several services or areas, which means structured pages and local search work a builder does not do for you.
- Nobody has time to keep it current, so prices, hours and services go out of date.
- The site is getting visits but not enquiries, which is usually a writing problem, not a design one.
At that point the builder subscription is not the cost. The work you are missing is. Our packages cover it from £449 setup and £39 a month, including hosting, so there is no builder subscription on top.
