Website maintenance packages

A website is not finished when it launches. Something has to keep it online, secure, backed up and correct. Here is what that involves, what it typically costs, and how to tell a fair maintenance package from a vague one.

What maintenance covers

  • Hosting and SSL. Keeping the site online and on https.
  • Updates. On WordPress, the core software, theme and plugins, which need updating often and can break each other.
  • Security and backups. Monitoring, and a recent copy you can restore if something goes wrong.
  • Content edits. Changing prices, hours, team and services as the business changes.
  • Checks. Forms still sending, pages still loading, nothing broken after an update.

What maintenance is not

New pages, redesigns, new features and SEO campaigns are projects, not maintenance. A good package says clearly where the line is, so you are not surprised by a bill for something you assumed was covered.

What it costs

There is no standard price, because packages cover different things. As a published example, GoDaddy's UK guide puts maintenance for a basic designer-built site at about £600 a year, on top of hosting. Hosting on its own runs from about £7 a month at Krystal to £13.99 a month at SiteGround once its introductory price ends.

When comparing packages, add up hosting, updates and edits together. A cheap host plus a separate maintenance contract can cost more than one fee that covers both.

Our monthly fee is the maintenance

Every one of our packages includes hosting, SSL, updates and edits to existing pages in the monthly fee. Launch includes up to 4 edit requests a month, done within 3 working days. Grow and Scale include reasonable use, done the next working day.

Maintaining an existing website

If your site was built by someone else, the honest first question is whether it is worth maintaining. A slow, out-of-date WordPress site with abandoned plugins can cost more to keep alive than to replace. We will tell you which on a call. Our redesign cost guide covers the trade-off.

Questions people ask

How much should website maintenance cost per month?

It depends on what is included. Compare the total of hosting, updates, backups and edits. Ours is from £39 a month with all of those included.

Does a Wix or Squarespace site need maintenance?

Less technical maintenance, because the platform handles hosting and updates. It still needs someone to keep the content correct, and the subscription still has to be paid.

Do I need maintenance for a WordPress site?

Yes. WordPress, its theme and plugins need regular updates for security, and updates occasionally break things. Unmaintained WordPress sites are a common target.
