This is the cheapest website each business offers, not counting online shops. 45% offer one for under £500 and 75% for under £1,000. The median is £545, and the middle half of sites sit between £350 and £1,000.

The cheap end is mostly small sites: of the sites under £300 that state a page count, 25 of 34 are one to three pages.

Published UK price guides often put a five-page small business site at £1,500 to £5,000 (Whito, Cude Design, Media Village). Designers who publish their prices charge a median of £750 for five pages, with the middle half between £499 and £1,250.

The gap is real, but so is a bias: studios that only quote on request are not in this index, and they tend to cost more. Read these figures as what published prices look like, not what every website costs.

The median pay-monthly website costs £49 a month across 79 providers, with the middle half between £30 and £74. 73% ask for nothing up front. Check the minimum term before you sign: over two years, a £49 monthly plan costs £1,176. See how pay monthly websites compare.

Care plans and hourly rates

  • Care or hosting after a one-off build: median £29 a month across 52 sites, middle half £20 to £50. This is what keeps the site hosted, secure and updated after it launches.
  • Hourly rates: median £50 an hour across the 18 sites that publish one. A small sample, so treat it as a guide.

London and the rest of the UK

Where a business says where it is based, the cheapest website in London has a median of £699 (19 sites), against £500 elsewhere (83 sites). The London sample is small, so this is an indication, not a firm gap.

Most sites don't say whether VAT is included

77% of the sites we read do not say whether their prices include VAT. 41 say their prices are plus VAT and 20 say VAT is included or not charged. If you are comparing quotes, ask, because 20% changes the answer: a £750 site plus VAT is £900.

Where our prices sit

We build websites too, so here is where we sit. Our Launch package is £449 setup, then £39 a month with hosting, updates and edits included. That is below the median cheapest website (£545) and below the median pay-monthly price (£49 a month). See all our prices.

How we collected the data

  • We searched Google UK for 14 website price searches, nationally and in 8 cities, and found 682 web design websites.
  • We read each site's homepage and pricing pages. 409 showed prices in pounds.
  • We kept only a business's own website prices, with the exact wording and page recorded for each package. We left out general "a website typically costs" ranges, hosting companies, directories, SEO-only firms and businesses outside the UK.
  • That left 269 businesses and 788 packages. Every figure is worked out per business, so a studio with eight packages counts once.
  • Prices were collected on 6 November 2026. We will update the index every quarter. The next update is due in February 2027.

The index covers businesses that publish their prices. Studios that quote only on request are missing, and they are often dearer, so the true market average for all websites is likely higher than these figures.
